How to create your own website with wordpress.com

 

How to create a professional looking website with wordpress, wordpress is a free blog/website design program that you run on the Internet. When you sign up for an account you automatically enter into a page where you can select your websites details, the only catch with wordpress is that your site domain must contain their name E.g. YOURSITE.wordpress.com even with this it is a great way to create a free website! I will show you how to customize your site to your likings!

When you go to wordpress.com you can sign up for an account that will only take a few minutes, some simple questions help them verify what your nickname will be and your other settings you would like. When you sign up you should be taken directly to another page where you can set up your sites details! The first box will say “BLOG DOMAIN” this is the box where you input the name you would like for your site! Underneath this box there will be another box titled “BLOG TITLE” which is what will appear on tabs with Internet browsers. Then you can also select what language you would like your blog to be in, and if you would like your blog to show up on search engines. When you are done selecting these options click the “CREATE BLOG” button at the bottom of the page, the name you selected may already be taken, if so just try a different name till you get it!

The next thing you need to do is select a theme, to get to the dashboard of your site go up to the top of the page and position your mouse over the “DASHBOARDS” button. A list of your sites will appear, select the one you wish to edit and then it will send you to the dashboard. To get to the themes go to the left side of the page, there should be several buttons click the appearance button. It will take you to a page with different pictures of themes on them, be sure to select the right one for you. Pay close attention to the descriptions right below the title under each picture; choose one that has a customizable header.

When your done selecting a theme you will want to create a header, now to create the banner/header you will need the size. To find the size you need to go back to the panel on the left side f the page, find the one that Sais appearance, it should be darkened and have several buttons attached to it. Select the one that Sais “CUSTOM HEADER” to get to the next page. Underneath the large title “UPLOAD NEW HEADER IMAGE” it will have a description, which will contain the size of the banner that you need to use, if your image is to big r to small it will give you the crop selection, but when cropped it may have a grainy look to it. Then once you’re done with an image click the “CHOOSE FILE” button and select the image.

Next you will want widgets, Widgets are small boxes containing apps and text on the side panel of your site. To get to the widgets box go back to the appearance button and select the add on that Sais “WIDGETS” and it will take you to the widgets page. Once you are there look thru the widgets and see which ones might interest you, one that will almost always be needed is the “PAGES” widget, which will contain the pages of your site. When you have found the ones you like click the bar and drag it to one of the other boxes labeled either “SIDE BAR 1” or “SIDE BAR 2” depending on how many sidebars your site contains. When you have dragged them there you can select the options for them, when you are finished click save and then click on the little arrow on the bar above that widget. Then they will appear on your website!

Now wordpress is not just a blog, you can also add pages but you also need to know how to post posts on the main page…the blog page. First we will go over how to post a post on the blog page. First go up to the bar at the very very top of your dashboard page of your site, position your mouse over the one that is labeled “NEW POST” and a list of your blogs will appear. Click the one you would like to post. There will be a small title box at the top, and a larger box for the actual post, once you are done writing what you wanted you need to make sure the post appears at the front of your page. To do this go over to the right side of the page to the gray box that Sais “PUBLISH” on it, underneath look for the “VISIBILITY” option and click edit. Another list should pop down and have different options on it, click the one that Sais “STICK THIS POST TO THE FRONT PAGE” and then click ok and move on. Then on the right side of the page also under the same gray bar that Sais publish there is a blue button that says “PUBLISH” on it, click this button and wait for it to reload the page, you made a post!

Now you also need to know how to create a new page, to do this go to the left side of the dashboard page of your site and click the little arrow on the button that Sais “PAGES” and a drop down box should appear with two options, click the one that Sais “ADD NEW” it will take you to a new page. On the new page it will have a small box that you can put the title into and a bigger one that will have what ever you choose to write in it. Then when your done with naming and adding contents to these boxes click the button on the right side of the page that is labeled “PUBLISH” if you need to edit pages later go to the left side of the dashboard of your site and go to the drop down box off of the “PAGES” button and click the on that sais “EDIT” from there you can apply different options to your pages.

HI! This is lecraeman! I decided i would start a blog for two reasons:

1 For school, Because we have to write an essay about how to do something(E.G. starting a new blog )

2. Because i thought i would like to tell about important events in my life!

Well im back! I got, well my parent got adobe photoshop elements 8 BOO YAAAAAAA! So i made a nice lil edit! Not perfect cause of the edges…
